The following document is designed to outline what is considered proper raid behavior as well as defining the leadership roles the guild will provide to its members. The hope is that through proper thought and organization that the raid experience will be as smooth and enjoyable for everyone as possible. The main points have been bolded, but please take the time to read the explanation on things you are unsure of. In the end, it will make the raid more fun for everyone. Please refer back to this document periodically as no system is perfect and changes may be made.
Section I – Roles and Responsibilities
*Member – the default role; needs to show up and adhere to the guidelines below.
*Tactician – the designated tactician’s job is to designate where the party should be standing while the next mob is aggroed. In the times that crowd control abilities are needed (sap, freeze trap, sheep, etc.), they will be the one to designate targets. If the tactician says “wait at the bottom of the stairs” that means *everyone* other than the requested crowd control. Do not wander forward, as that may endanger the group as a whole. This person is designated by the Raid Leader, and may be the Raid Leader.
*Raid Leader – will generally be an officer, selected in advance by the Raid Council when possible. Responsible for the smooth operation of an individual raid.
*Loot Officer (or “Loot Bitch”) – Responsible for dispersal of greed items during an individual raid, also should be designated the Master Looter under that scheme. May or may not be the Raid Leader.
*Raid Council – a small group of guild officers, responsible for coordinating all aspects of raiding for the entire guild in terms of targets, times and reporting. Any complaints about behavior or performance on a raid should be brought to their attention.
*Note that of the “special” roles (items B, C and D), any one individual may only have 2 of the 3.
Section II – Before the Raid
*Be on-time. For a scheduled guild raid, please sign-up via the Calendar at and be as prompt as your schedule allows (try to be there 10-15 minutes prior to the posted start time). Many people are taking time away from other tasks so that they may raid with the group, and starting late because some people are unavailable is very inconsiderate. It is understandable that sometimes real-life concerns will delay you, but on raid nights please try to avoid starting instance groups within 3 hours of a posted raid time, or make the group you are with aware that you have a guild event at a particular time. Note that if you don’t sign up in advance, there might not be room for you! Make sure to visit the Calendar regularly!
*Ask for invites. At the scheduled time, if you do not receive an invite to the raid and would like to go, please say so in guild chat. There are any numbers of reasons that someone’s invitation might be lost in the initial bustle of getting things organized, so speak up if you feel you might have been overlooked.
*Accept where the guild has decided to raid. Whether via majority vote during non-scheduled raids or the decision of the raid council on scheduled ones, please do not avoid the raid because “there’s nothing there I want”. ATF is not raiding solely for loot, we are raiding to spend time together as a group and practice together. If you feel the instances that you need are not being run frequently enough, please mention this to one of the normal guild officers.
*Stock up on supplies. While this might seem like second-nature, it never hurts to double check your supplies of water, ammo, food, reagents, etc. Nothing is worse than getting to an instance and discovering you forgot some critical item and having to ask someone else to bring it to you. Also, remember that mages and warlocks might not always be available, so make sure to get water and potions.
*Form up at a single location. The Horde is an ever-present annoyance on this server, and traveling singly is an excellent way to give them Honor Kills. With this in mind, the raid leader will designate a location for the group to meet at prior to going into the instance. Please, do not run off ahead unless requested to do so. It is much harder to kill 10 or 15 Alliance at once than it is to kill 2, then 3, then 4.
Section III – During the Raid
*Random for Loot. On guild raids, loot order will be done via a random roll. Therefore, make sure you roll when requested. After three requests with no response, you will simply be placed at the end of the loot order. People who arrive at the instance late, as well as people who join a raid in progress, may be placed at the end of the loot order. So make sure to be on time and with the group!
*Loot is not “1 greed, 1 need, 1 set.” While the standard of pickups, there is no 1/1/1 rule. If you need an item, say so. There is no limit on needs HOWEVER, if you have received an item as a need and someone else who has not used a need also needs an item, they will be given the item. This also applies to set items. This means if you are the only person who wants multiple items, you can walk away from a raid with a great deal of gear. However, do not abuse this by calling need on items so you can sell them or disenchant them. Only call need if you have the intent to USE the item and it is an upgrade from your current item. Members signing up in advance on the Calendar will have priority on need and set items. Note that calling need will skip your turn in the greed order. Calling need multiple times will result in multiple skips (assuming that there is enough loot to go through the rotation again).
*Obey the Tactician. This point can’t be stressed enough. Depending on the tactician’s class and expertise, you may be asked to do things that seem unusual during a pickup group. Don’t quibble, just do it.
*Take note of priority targets. Some mobs are more troublesome than others. These mobs need to be taken down when active FIRST as designated by the Tactician. Examples are the caster dragons and Summoners of Upper Blackrock Spire as well as the Dark Summoners of Scholomance. Also be aware of any mobs that are “ADD” (meaning, do not respond properly to aggro by running everywhere) and try to keep them slowed or stunned as much as possible. Examples are again the Dark Summoners of Scholomance and Nerub (the spider boss) of Stratholme.
*Stay out of doorways and stairwells. Many spells (notably healing) are dependent on line of sight, which is terribly unreliable in places like those. This can lead to you getting killed (bad) and potentially causing the group to wipe (worse). So don’t do it!
*Coordinate with other classes. Remember, the group is much better when we use abilities that compliment rather than offset each other. The major focus of going on these raids is to learn those tactics, so they won’t be discussed here. However, talk to other players. Nobody knows everything about every class, so if your job is being made more difficult, say something. It could be that we never realized it was an issue before.
*DO NOT LOOT DURING COMBAT. While getting loot is an important part of raiding, please wait until the current fight is over. Those pop-up boxes are a distraction, and may cause someone to miss a critical move they need to make (heal spell, taunt, etc.). While it is natural to sometimes forget about a mob under crowd control (sheeped, sapped, etc.), please make an effort to be aware. If it becomes a repeated issue, the Raid Leader at any time may institute the Master Looter scheme. This is not a punishment of individuals, it is an action undertaken to ensure the smooth operation of the raid. Should the Loot Officer not be the raid leader, the Master Looter should be given to that individual.
*Check before looting bosses. Do not loot a boss until all players are active (meaning: alive), even if it’s just a sub-boss. You never know if that might drop something useful for that poor rogue that got eaten during the fight.
*“Set” Bosses will always be Master Looter. There are some bosses that are very finicky about player deaths or other events. Sadly, most of these bosses are also ones who drop set pieces for everyone. Since there is no worse feeling than losing a set piece to a bug or someone’s inattentiveness, Baron Rivendare, Dark Master Gandling and General Drakkisath will ALWAYS been engaged with Master Looter on. Not as much fun to not see the pop-up, but far preferable to “Hey, your set piece dropped…what do you mean you can’t loot it?”
*Pass on non-craft items. In the course of a raid, many items will drop that trip the threshold. These fall into three broad categories: Equippable gear, craft items and quest items.
**Equippable items are exactly that, things that can be equipped. Regardless of type, pass on these items and they will be needed/greeded as appropriate. Note that even very valuable things like BoE epics will be passed out as needs, and only those who can make use of the item will be allowed to roll.
**Craft Items would be things such as gems, essence of X, mineral veins and the like. With limited exceptions (Currently: Righteous Orbs), these are to simply be rolled on as greeds. Any item worth in excess of 30g on the AH will be greeded out in the same manner as equippable items. Certain materials will be held for the guild, and these will be collected by the Loot Officer and distributed to selected individuals (Pristine Black Diamonds for the Paladin Epic Mount quest, for example).
**BoP quest items are to be passed on and rolled for by those with the quest. These would be things such as Frayed Abomination Stitchings and Skin of Shadows. Non-BoP quest items will be collected by the Loot Officer and distributed in IronForge at the end of the raid to those who need them. Items that are BoP but not attached to any particular quest (i.e. – Corrupter’s Scourgestones), should be rolled on as greeds.
**If you have ANY doubts on what you should be doing, DO NOT CLICK ANYTHING AND ASK. Better to look somewhat foolish than to make a mistake and look even more foolish and possibly make someone else upset
*Keep the chatter on TeamSpeak to a minimum. Random talking is fine during lulls, but while engaging in combat or preparing for the next group, please do not talk about random issues…the healers will often need to coordinate to conserve mana. If you are not on the raid but in the channel, please be respectful. Don’t force the server admins to mute you or move you to another room.
*Set TeamSpeak to “Push to Talk”. While we’re all friends in ATF, we really don’t need to hear you chewing food, or talking to your roommate, or getting yelled at by your parents. While sometimes these things are amusing, they are by and large a hassle. Please make sure this option is set as a courtesy to others.
Section IV – Special Rules for 20 to 40-man raids
*Only select people loot during 40 man raids. In an effort to keep the raids moving along, loot in the largest instances will be set to free-for-all however, only select individuals should be looting. This is the Loot Officer and any individuals designated by them.
*The Loot Officer handles all non-usable item loot. In many of these instances there is a great deal of quest items (Troll coins, etc.) and high-end materials (Core leather, Fiery Core, etc) that drop. These should be gathered by the Loot Officer during the raid and held until the end. Quest items will be distributed in Ironforge after the raid while materials will be given to people designated to hold them for future guild crafting.
*Teamspeak is required for these raids. While we sometimes allow people to not be on TeamSpeak during the smaller raids, the larger instances nearly require it to get the coordination correct. To have the Raid Leader give a 2 minute explanation on TeamSpeak and then need to type it up adds tremendously to the time taken. You need not have a microphone but must be on and listening. If noise is a concern in your gaming area during raid times, we advise headphones.
*Teamspeak is to be kept clear. Unless you are calling out an alert or passing raid information, TeamSpeak is to be silent outside of rest/recovery periods. As soon as the group begins to move again, all ears should be listening to the Raid Leader’s instructions. There are too many people for everyone to give input, so please try to refrain from speaking unless required. There’s plenty of downtime between fights to talk about possible strategies or good-natured ribbing.
Section V – After the Raid
*Meet for loot distribution of non-usable items. Meet up outside the instance, the pool in the Mystic Ward of Ironforge, to distribute non-usable items collected by the Loot Officer.
*Share your success with the guild. Please, if you earned a new set piece or great new weapon, share that with the rest of the guild. Part of being in a guild is in the shared celebration of its members. Try not to go overboard and above all do not use it as a source of bragging or belittling someone else, but sharing such success will help motivate lower levels to join in as well as helping everyone feel like the guild is getting somewhere.
*Thank those who went above and beyond. If you feel someone did more than they were expected to or simply did their job very well, please take some time out to thank them. Remember, this is a guild for community, not loot.
*Bring problems to an officer’s attention. If you feel you were somehow slighted during a raid, please do not make an issue of it during the heat of the moment. In the moment, it can seem much larger than it really is. Try to take a day or two off. If that doesn’t help or if you just need to let loose, please whisper a guild officer and make your concerns known. Screaming at an individual or ranting in guild chat is never a productive course of action. Let the officers know so that the matter can be settled fairly.
Section VI – Administrative Responsibilities – Members
*Realize that the scheduled raids will work differently from the impromptu guild raids and pickup groups. Do not complain because that “isn’t how X does it”, if you feel a new strategy or method would be more effective please whisper the raid leader and/or post it to the ATF forums for discussion.
*The fact that you were just at Scholo on a pickup does not mean Scholo will not also be the guild raid target. Please be aware of this when running pickup groups the same night as a scheduled raid.
*Should you acquire a set piece on a non-scheduled raid, please let an officer know. This will help keep records up-to-date which in turn can move the instances you need up higher on the priority list.
Section VII – Administrative Responsibilities – Raid Council
This section is to define the responsibilities of the Raid Council, normal members need not be overly concerned with this section
*The Raid Council is formed of five officers who volunteer for the task. If there are insufficient volunteers, the Council will proceed with the number available. If a majority of all officers (not just Raid Council officers) agree, an exemplary non-officer can be a member of the Raid Council. So long as 60% (rounded down) of the members are available, they will be considered to be able to meet.
*The raid council is responsible for keeping raid destinations varied and useful. To that end they should maintain a public record of:
*Date and destination of guild raids (both scheduled and, when possible, impromptu)
*Who attended
*Any set pieces or other notable gear received
*Any rare quest items received (Chromatic scales, etc.)
*Using the information above, the raid council will meet at least every other week at a time of their choosing to select the next two weeks of scheduled raids. These times/targets will then be posted to the Calendar and announced on all WoW forums as being available for signups. While there must be a minimum of three scheduled times a week, the council at its sole discretion can add/change dates and times so long as the raids so adjusted are four days beyond meeting date. This is to provide them the leeway to adjust to changing guild needs.
*Greater weight should be given to the needs of those members who attend the scheduled raids regularly, unless that entails running the same instances repeatedly.
*While the council members are not required to be at all non-scheduled raids, do try to make an effort to update records with any pertinent information (new set items, etc.). Officers present for such raids should make an attempt (either via the message boards or in-game mail) to get this information to someone on the council.
*Be fair to everyone. Being on the Raid Council is not a position of power, it is a position of service. Please remember that everything you do needs to be to the betterment of the guild.
