So, I've got a pretty dumb question - Living where you do, in a known "hurricane Alley' as it were, does your home owners' insurance cover hurricane damage? Or s it like Flood protection that you need to buy separately? Make sure you're ready for the storm, and stay safe...

Well, in our area, we only get wind and rain from storms that have been down graded to tropical or subtropical. We are generally too far inland. Only once that I recall, in 1989, wsa the storm (Hugo) still a hurricane as it passed over Charlotte. There are no special insurance provisions here for hurricanes. Lots of folks got flooded when when what was left of Fay finally got here but they needed flood insurance for that.
Moo is right. The Charleston area of course will catch a lot more hell than Charlotte.

Yeah, Hurricane Alley is really more the Florida -> SC Coast...it's actually very unusual for hurricanes to hit NC first...far from unheard of, but uncommon.
Around here we usually get the wind and rain from the storms once they're tropical storms and such. Living here for around 20 years now, I think one storm has been any sort of hurricane when it passed over this area, and it was barely such. Left a lot of devastation, but that owed more to the weeks of rain beforehand that had saturated all the ground and left trees very easily knocked over by the winds.
But around here, no insurance increases that I know of. Total insurance bill a year is about a thousand bucks for my house and my car, so.....

It turns out that we didn't get one bit of crap out of Hanna. Early Saturday morning was a bit cloudy with a decent breeze but not one drop of rain. Later in the morning the sun came out and it turned into a beautiful (but rather warm) day.
Hope everyone else fared well....
