View Full Version : Stoke's 80's Song O' The Day Stoke 03-01-2007, 06:23 AM We start off with this classic from 1980. YouTube - Another one bites the dust Queen SilverTalon 03-01-2007, 10:04 AM And another one's on and another one's on....another rides the bus! YouTube - Weird Al Yankovic -Another One Rides the Bus Stoke 03-01-2007, 10:11 AM Tomorrow we will visit 1981. RagingSamster 03-01-2007, 03:01 PM I just checked out Starland Vocal Band's "Afternoon Delight" but that was 70's :( Stoke 03-01-2007, 03:16 PM But a cool song back in the day nonetheless..... RagingSamster 03-02-2007, 05:23 AM Stoke musta slept in today Stoke 03-02-2007, 05:39 AM Nope.... combing the vaults looking for something good. 1981 was kind of a sucky year music-wise... SilverTalon 03-02-2007, 05:50 AM Like you have anything else to do on a Friday... :p Stoke 03-02-2007, 05:51 AM A nice little overlooked jewel from 1981.... YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. RagingSamster 03-02-2007, 06:41 AM I barely remember that song, it was like right on the beginning edge of new wave/punk that I hated because they were all poofs. gah! all my favs are from the 70s :( SilverTalon 03-02-2007, 06:53 AM Silver's submission for 1981: YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. Album was released in 1981, and was a hit in 1981. :) Good ol' Foreigner.... RagingSamster 03-02-2007, 07:56 AM Off the "Head Games" Album? Foreigner rocked! /edit nope... looks like jukebox hero SilverTalon 03-02-2007, 08:06 AM Apparently it was originally released off the album "4" RagingSamster 03-02-2007, 08:10 AM wow, memories! I hadn't used those particular memory related brain cells in quite some time. Dust shot out my ears Stoke 03-02-2007, 08:17 AM doing research now for the 1982 offering.... trying to stay away from the "mainstream" of things.... Stoke 03-05-2007, 04:47 AM YouTube - Mexican Radio SilverTalon 03-05-2007, 05:16 AM Added for later repeated pop culture references and the fact it was released in 1982: YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. :yup: Stoke 03-05-2007, 05:34 AM Do we need a SILVERTALONS 80's Song Of The Day thread? SilverTalon 03-05-2007, 05:49 AM The more 80s the better. :) Though I supposedly should be doing songs of the 90s...according to SOME people around here... Stoke 03-05-2007, 05:51 AM Eh... as far as I'm concerned, they might as well stopped making anything after about 1990 or 91.... everything since then has not met the qualifications to be Stoke approved. SilverTalon 03-05-2007, 05:53 AM Eh, there's been a goodly amount of stuff to come out of the 90s IMO. While the 80s produced a lot of classics, I think we're about to the point that the 90s will start cranking out their share. Stoke 03-05-2007, 07:31 AM My favorite type of music is from the 80's "Hair Band" era.... after that was unjustly killed off by the onset of grunge, I just never grasped much of the music that came afterwards. There are a few exceptions but for the most part it just wasn't for me. Thank goodness for channel 23 on my Sirius radio..... SilverTalon 03-05-2007, 07:39 AM I've found that learning to play music and understanding harmonics and melodies at a more fundamental level has expanded the type of music I can enjoy. :) Like Metallica, as much as people like to bash them....they do have an excellent sense of musicality. Find the Apocalyptica (string quartet that plays Metallica songs) recording of Master of Puppets and listen to the guitar solo part. Exquisite. Stoke 03-05-2007, 07:51 AM Yep... Master of Puppets.... excellent album. It came out right there in 1986...right in the middle of the metal years..... SilverTalon 03-05-2007, 08:21 AM Yes, but they've carried much of that through the 90s. :) Unless you want to place a special exemption on any band that released music on both decades. ;P Stoke 03-05-2007, 08:27 AM Eh...Metallica sorta "changed" after the "and justice for all" album. That was the first with the new bassist. After that album I sorta kinda lost interest. But.... i did mention there were a few exceptions. Stang 03-05-2007, 04:53 PM We so need to play "The Safety Dance" at the prom! Stoke 03-05-2007, 05:00 PM Ohhhh the ATF Prom. I wonder who I will ask to be my date? Banne 03-06-2007, 01:34 AM Back to what you were saying about Metallica....supposedly, their new album due out at the end of this year will "return to their roots" , ie, epic long songs with thrashy breakdowns and speed metalz. Im excited. are YOU? Stoke 03-06-2007, 03:01 AM Im excited. are YOU? HELL YEAHS! Stoke 03-06-2007, 04:30 AM 1983 Couldnt make up my mind on which one so..... YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. Stoke 03-07-2007, 04:22 AM The subject matter of this 1984 tune is sorta interesting.... YouTube - Cyndi Lauper - She Bop RagingSamster 03-07-2007, 05:02 AM I thought she was out there until I saw a concert she did on PBS about a year ago... ya, she's wierd, but as an awesome show-person and singer, she has skillz. Stoke 03-07-2007, 05:22 AM We shall forget the whole WWF fiasco. RagingSamster 03-07-2007, 05:54 AM WWF: Wierd, wierd, females? Stoke 03-07-2007, 06:02 AM she appeared with WWF Superstar Hulk Hogan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hulk_Hogan), who played her "bodyguard". In return, she made many appearances as herself in a number of WWF (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Wrestling_Entertainment)'s "Rock and Wrestling" events, where she was supposedly the manager of Wendy Richter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendy_Richter). Their entrance music was "Girls Just Want to Have Fun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girls_Just_Want_to_Have_Fun_%28song%29)". This cross-promotion arranged by David Wolff (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Wolff) and Vince McMahon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vince_McMahon) also led to a number of appearances with professional wrestlers (most notably Captain Lou Albano (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Lou_Albano), who she met on an airplane during her Blue Angel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Angel_%28band%29) days) appearing in her early videos. Lauper also contributed to "The Wrestling Album (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wrestling_Album)", under the pseudonym "Mona Flambé" as guest backing vocals. She later described the period as fun, but it became an increasing distraction to her musical ambitions, and largely stopped her WWF appearances after 1985 So yeah...we shall forget.... Stoke 03-08-2007, 04:45 AM 1985! Little Stokey graduates from High School and is listening to this..... YouTube - Ratt - Round and Round RagingSamster 03-08-2007, 05:36 AM There must be a story as to the appearance of Uncle Miltey in the video Hairbands FTW ( posers!) Stoke 03-08-2007, 06:00 AM The video featured legendary comedian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comedian)Milton Berle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milton_Berle), whose nephew was then band manager Marshall Berle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marshall_Berle). SilverTalon 03-08-2007, 06:16 AM That tricksy, tricksy Stoke... Banne 03-08-2007, 10:05 AM 1985! Little Stokey graduates from High School and is listening to this.....
